When the school was founded, in 210, there was no kitchen on the school domain. Preparing the food was done outside on an open fire. Because there were not many students, it was possible to do it this way. Only at times with bad weather, like the rainy season, it was difficult to cook this way.

Soon, more children came to school and we felt the need to have a separate room where the cooking equipment could be stored. This was solved by constructing a kitchen which is still used  to this day, though you can dispute whether the building is worthy of the name kitchen. The current structure consists primarily of a few wooden planks and a simple roof with plates. Because they cook on a wood fire inside, the planks are attached in a way that they do not fit nicely. This way the smoke can get out. This, however, makes that dirt can get in.

Because of the numerous holes and a lack of doors, chickens, cats and dogs have free access to the kitchen. This is absolutely not hygienic. They try to keep the animals out of the cooking space but of course there is no constant supervision. And who likes to see a goat nibble on his dinner?

In 2015, we made sure that electricity was provided in the kitchen. This means a small refrigerator could be placed to protect certain foods from the heat and the animals. Also, a light was installed to facilitate cooking in the early morning and late evenings. The light however creates a constant presence of insects when it is dark.

At the beginning of 2016, the boarding school was opened. This means that some children are now constantly staying at school and food needs to be prepared for them in the mornings and evenings as well. This has become a difficult task in the small kitchen. The space to store things, one big table, is no longer adequate and does not meet normal hygienic standards.

To improve the quality of the food and to keep the work for our cooking women doable, we decided to build a proper kitchen. This would become a closed space on the side of the domain instead of in the middle of the playground. In addition, we will provide this new kitchen with a sufficient number of cabinets and shelves to store all cooking and eating materials, a sink and a lean-to for the fire places so they can use them in any weather conditions.

Next to a kitchen there was also need for a place to eat to make sure that the childeren will not have to eat in classes or spread around the play ground. In this way we avoid that the animals come for food left overs and we give the students a nice and hygienic place to have lunch.

In September 2017 we started the construction works. By the end of March 2018 it was finished. In total this project costed about €19.000. A wise invenstment in the needed hygiene and in the further extension of the school.
