Many of our students do not live in Asuadei itself. They come from different surrounding villages. Some of them even live up to 15 kilometres away from school. This has two major consequences.

First of all it takes our children a lot of time to get to school and back home in the evening. They have to wake up early in the morning and walk quite a distance to the school. The children who live even further away can join the school bus. The bus made three rounds every morning and evening to get everyone in school. This naturally meant that some children had to leave very early in the morning and wait at school until classes begin. Meanwhile, the school bus was picking up the other kids. Also in the evening after class it took several hours to get everyone back home. Since our dorms are in use the bus only needs to make two rounds on the main road because the children living on the very bad road stay in the boarding house now.

In addition to that, a school bus comes with a price tag. Not only do we have to buy fuel but we also want to keep the bus well maintained. The price of fuel has risen sharply in recent years so the costs of the three rides every morning and evening was growing a lot. The Ghanaian roads are also not very good and our school bus was not new at all at that moment. Altogether, this meant that especially the local mechanics earned a lot of money from us.

To reduce this costs and to avoid that our children lose so much time every day just waiting, it seemed a good idea to establish a boarding house on the school domain. This way the children who live far away from school could stay at the school and the transport costs would drop immediately.

In the beginning of 2015, they were already working hard on building our dorms. The plan was to put two dormitories, one for girls and one for boys, with a small house for Emelia and her family next to it. This way there would always be adults close by at night. Proper sanitary was also a priority for us now that children would be living at the school.

By the end of the year the building itself was completed, except for some small details. Therefor children can stay in the boarding house since the beginning of 2016. In total there is room for about 60 kids in the two dormitories.
